My Hello Fresh Experience
So... after my mom raved and raved about her 'Hello Fresh' experience I finally decided to give it a go! She sent me a code for 3-free meals so I really had nothing to lose. I have always been interested in the concept of the "at home meal delivery kits" but for me personally, I'm pretty familiar with the concept of going to the grocery store and preparing my own dinners without following a recipe. I have always viewed these delivery meal kits ideal for people who aren't so comfortable in the kitchen or who don't have time to go grocery shopping. I must say though, I was pleasantly surprised when my Hello Fresh box arrived. I was given the option of ordering 3 meals from about 8 options and ended up choosing: 'Buttered Up Steak', 'Tropical Tilapia Tacos' and 'Pesto Turkey Burgers' and each meals ingredients were placed in separate containers with the most simple step by step instructions:
Tropical Tilapia Tacos
This was probably my favorite of the three meals because 1) my husband isn't the biggest seafood fan so I don't get to experiment much with fish at home and 2) fish tacos are one of my favorite meals to order out at restaurants! I also have never really tried to make a cabbage slaw or played around with adding mango into any of my dinner recipes. This meal brought me totally out of my comfort zone in that regard and I am OH SO GLAD it did! This was the easiest meal of the three, by far the tastiest and the most satisfying in terms of feeling full and maintaining a certain level of "healthiness". This meal probably took a total of 15 minutes to make and I will certainly be making this meal again. It can easily be recreated on any regular night and I look forward to playing around with the slaw & sauces :)
Pesto Turkey Burgers
The pesto turkey burgers with "melty mozzarella and lemony roasted carrots" was our second favorite meal. This was was equally as quick and simple to prepare and any food that involves pesto is automatically a winner in my book! I just can't get enough! The ONE thing I will say that disappointed us- and was honestly the most disappointing part of our 'Hello Fresh' experience was the amount of carrots they provided with this meal. I'm talking 2 of the tiniest carrots I've ever laid my eyes on. Once they were cut and cooked there was really only enough for 1 serving. The carrots in the photo below were both servings combined... The only other thing I would have changed with this meal would have been a leaner ground turkey. I typically do 99/1 but these were 90/10 which ended up a bit greasier than I prefer- albeit mighty tasty!
The last meal, which my mom and I prepared while she was visiting, was the buttered-up steak, roasted potatoes and garlicky green beans. Steak/red-meat in general is another food that I don't often fix in my household as my husband is not a huge fan. Therefore, this meal was a treat! The steaks were surprisingly lean and tender which I was concerned about when opting for this as our 3rd meal. I personally am NOT a fan of mustard and the "buttered-up" part of this meal was a mustard herb butter that was meant to be poured over the steak once cooked. While my mom loved it, I ended up whipping up my own garlic/herb butter to our over mine which worked out perfectly fine!
Overall, we were very pleased with our 'Hello Fresh' experience and our first attempt with an at-home meal delivery kit service. I can see this being an excellent option for people who don't have time to go grocery shopping and who find themselves grabbing food to-go at the end of a long day. As I mentioned the meals were a total of 5-6 simple steps and although they did take a little prep time, they were all completely done within 30-45 minutes at the most. I was satisfied with the amount of food, the freshness of the food and the taste of the food with every meal we tried! The price really isn't that bad either... I think I looked into it and the 3 meal option for 2 people that I received would normally run around $59.99- so $10 per person/per meal. I think I could have gone to the grocery store and recreated these meals for closer to $6-8 but like I said- if you want to take the guess work out of the whole preparing dinner process or if you want to comfortably approach cooking and don't consider yourself a savvy cook, then I would 100% recommend 'Hello Fresh'!
***SIDE NOTE: One thing I would like to mention is something my sister brought to my attention when she saw we were trying this company out. At-home meal delivery kits are highly unfriendly to the environment. I wanted to do some of my own research into this and found the following information: HelloFresh locally sources their ingredients and their delivery service aims to reduce carbon emissions by optimizing their delivery routes so their vans travel the shortest distance possible while delivering the most meals in one trip. In a sense- you could justify that they are in fact reducing carbon emissions when comparing their method to customers taking multiple trips to the grocery store... In terms of the packaging, I do agree that every individual ingredient being separated in individual plastic packaging is pretty wasteful. The amount of cardboard in my box also seemed excessive, but in the grand scheme of things it is probably equivalent of the amount of waste from groceries required to make the same meals. The most surprising thing I discovered was that the freezer packs included in these at home meal delivery kits are the worst part. Some kits include 6" large ice packs! If you calculate the amount of these companies + the amount of meals that get delivered to Americans every week- the number of these freezer packs (that typically get thrown in the trash and not properly recycled) is staggering. I saved mine and plan to reuse it rather than trashing it, and some companies have a "take-back" program or suggest you donate to certain organizations such as a local boys/girls club which makes it a *little* better***
Thanks for reading you guys! I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience with this company! I will keep you posted if I try any other at-home meal delivery kits but for now I think I will stick to my usual routine :) I'd love to know if any of you have tried HelloFresh or any other similar companies, and how your experience went!
